Matt Doyle, a Californian with Ireland in his heart, continued his
efforts on behalf of the Irish Davis Cup squad, that he began in 1982. That
year he led them to the European Zone A Championships.
Very intelligent, Doyle earned an economics degree at Yale. He admits
one of the biggest sacrifics of being a tennis pro is having to give up his
daily perusal of the Wall Street Journal. Matt began playing tennis at age
five, eventually attaining the No. 1 ranking in California's 14-and-under age
group. When he grew tired of tennis, Matt took up basketball. At Yale, he
discovered his lack of jumping ability would curtail his hoop progress, so it
was time for a new sport. This time golf. He played No. 1 for the Yale golf
team, but personnel changes in the program caused him to return to tennis.
Knee operations continue to hamper Matt's mobility, but he has certainly
kept himself active in the sport: he served as ATP president from August,
1985 to August, 1987. He is currently ATP vice-president.
