Patrik Kühnen was a member of West Germany’s Davis Cup winning team in 1988-89. He had his biggest career win over Jimmy Connors in the fourth round at Wimbledon in 1988 en route to the quarter-finals (l. to Edberg). "This is the biggest win of my life," he said. With Gary Muller he reached the 1993 Wimbledon doubles semi-finals (l. to Woodbridge-Woodforde). Kühnen compiled a 0-2 record in singles and 3-3 mark in doubles finals. He started playing tennis aged nine and turned pro in 1985.
Since retiring in 1996, Kühnen has held the position of Germany’s Davis Cup captain from 2003-2012 and he also coached the German team at the ATP World Team Championships in Dusseldorf to titles in 2005 and 2011. Kühnen has also worked as a tournament director and television analyst.
