Jaume Munar upset former champion and World No. 8 Daniil Medvedev on Friday at the Miami Open presented by Itau to earn his third Top 10 win. The Spaniard outplayed Medvedev, who was struggling with a lower back injury, throughout the 78-minute clash to earn a 6-2, 6-3 win and advance to the third round.
Munar, who had never beaten a Top 10 player at an ATP Masters 1000 or a major, saved two break points when serving for the match and committed 14 unforced errors to 32 from Medvedev, who was unable to overcome his back injury in Miami.
Munar’s past Top 10 win prior to Friday came against Casper Ruud in Tokyo in 2022. With his latest upset, the 27-year-old is into the third round at a Masters 1000 event for the third time (Indian Wells 2022, Madrid 2023).
"It means a lot," Munar said. "I am feeling great after all the work I have put in to have a tournament like this. I feel really comfortable here and I have been playing great this year on hard courts. It got a little bit tight at the end but I am happy with the performance and it means a lot."

Munar is up two spots to No. 54 in the PIF ATP Live Rankings.
"I've been changing a lot," Munar said when asked about his game. "I changed techniques, tactics. It has been working very well this year. I think I have to keep improving to keep changing things. To look where my game can improve and I think me and my team are doing very well."
Medvedev, who advanced to the semi-finals in Indian Wells last week, had tape on his back.
"I was not 100 per cent physically, but I tried my best to get into the match. Every day was better and better. I had some problems after Indian Wells. Can happen," Medvedev said. "He played well, so that's why. I wouldn't go to the match if I would definitely know I'm not ready to win."
The seventh seed lifted the trophy in Miami two years ago but has won just one tour-level title since (Rome 2023). He will now have to wait for the clay swing to break his title duck.
Munar will next face Gael Monfils after the Frenchman saved one match point en route to beating Jiri Lehecka 6-1, 3-6, 7-6(8).
Monfils, 38, earned a first-round win against Fabian Marozsan to become the second-oldest player in history to win a match in Miami and he backed that up by overcoming the 26th seed Lehecka in two hours and eight minutes. Monfils struck 38 winners to 22 unforced errors and won 80 per cent (48/60) of his first-serve points, according to Infosys ATP Stats.
Stefanos Tsitsipas was also in trouble on Day 3 but unlike Medvedev, survived to reach the third round. The Greek rallied from a set and a break down to move past Chinese Taipei qualifier Chun-Hsin Tseng 4-6, 7-5, 6-3.
Tsitsipas lifted the trophy in Dubai last month and then advanced to the fourth round in Indian Wells. The 26-year-old's best result in Miami came in 2021 when he advanced to the quarter-finals. Aiming to improve that record, the World No. 10 next plays Sebastian Korda or Eliot Spizzirri.
