Cameron Norrie thrives in the California desert, and he showed it again on Wednesday.
The 29-year-old Briton, who claimed the BNP Paribas Open title in 2021, opened his campaign in dominant fashion, cruising past Italy’s Luca Nardi 6-0, 6-3.
Nardi, who made headlines last year in Indian Wells by upsetting then-World No. 1 Novak Djokovic on his way to the fourth round, couldn’t replicate that magic this time, as Norrie controlled the match from start to finish. The lefty dropped just three points behind his first serve (23/26), according to Infosys ATP Stats, and was nearly flawless from the baseline en route to a 64-minute victory.

One of four former champions in the draw, Norrie has reached at least the quarter-finals in three of the past four years. This year’s visit to the Indian Wells Tennis Garden marks Norrie’s first ATP Masters 1000 outing since Rome last year.
The World No. 77 in the PIF ATP Rankings will next meet 23rd seed Jiri Lehecka. Norrie leads their Lexus ATP Head2Head series 2-1, with Lehecka emerging victorious in their most recent encounter, a five-setter at the 2023 Australian Open.
Norrie’s opponent in the 2021 Indian Wells final, Nikoloz Basilashvili, was also in action, but Marcos Giron ousted the Georgian qualifier 7-5, 7-6(3). Giron will next face fourth seed Casper Ruud.
Roman Safiullin earned his first tour-level win since November by defeating American wild card Reilly Opelka 7-5, 6-4. Opelka was making his first Indian Wells appearance since 2022.
Damir Dzumhur overcame Roberto Bautista Agut 6-4, 1-6, 7-6(4) in a two-hour, 29-minute battle to record his first Masters 1000 victory since 2021 Miami. Belgian Zizou Bergs advanced with a 7-6(2), 6-3 victory against Ethan Quinn.
Frenchman Corentin Moutet advanced past Jordan Thompson 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 after creating 15 break chances, converting four. Moutet used his tricky lefty game to great effect, carving hefty slices and striking off-pace balls to draw errors out of the Aussie. Thompson finished with 53 unforced errors to the 25-year-old’s 34.
