Paul Annacone was a right-handed serve-volleyer, who attained a career-high No. 12 singles ranking (3 March 1986) and picked up three singles titles until he retired in 1993. His best Grand Slam performance came at 1984 Wimbledon when, ranked World No. 242 and straight out of the University of Tennessee, he surprised the tennis world by beating World No. 13 Johan Kriek in the fourth round before falling to Jimmy Connors in the quarterfinals.
With his long-time doubles partner Christo van Rensburg, Annacone won the 1985 Australian Open title and qualified for three year-end championships (1986, 1987, 1989). With David Wheaton he finished runner-up at the 1990 US Open. He won 14 team titles and achieve a career-high No. 3 doubles ranking (6 April 1987). He was a member of the 1986 United States Davis Cup team versus Australia, partnering Ken Flach in the World Group semifinal tie at Brisbane.
Annacone, the 1980 Orange Bowl doubles champion, attended the University of Tennessee from 1982-84 and was named the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Player of the Year in 1984, when he amassed a 51-3 record. He was also a member of the 1983-84 USTA junior Davis Cup team. He has two children, Nicholas (born 1988), who also attended Tennessee, and Olivia (born 13 February 1993), by his former wife Tracy. A former New York resident, he now lives in Los Angeles, California.
In his post-playing career, Annacone has established himself as one of the world's leading coaches. He coached American compatriot Pete Sampras (1996-2001/2002) and long-time British No. 1 Tim Henman (2003-2007), was Managing Director of the USTA's High Performance Program (2001-2003) and in November 2006 was appointed to support Paul Hutchins, the then Head of Men's Tennis at the Lawn Tennis Association. He was Great Britain's Davis Cup coach (April 2008-March 2010). In May 2010, he announced he would leave his post as the LTA's Men's Head Coach when his contract expired in August 2010, he began working with Roger Federer.
