Cameron Norrie’s career highlight came at the ATP Masters 1000 event in Indian Wells in 2021 when he captured the BNP Paribas Open title to become the first-ever British champion.
The lefty showed remarkable resilience during that run, earning four three-set victories en route to the crown. Norrie has since reached the quarter-finals twice in the Californian desert and the semi-finals at the Masters 1000 in Cincinnati.
Norrie caught up with ATPTour.com following his second-round win against Jiri Lehecka to talk about his favourite Masters 1000 city, his dream matchup and toughest part of winning a Masters 1000 trophy.
What is your favourite Masters 1000 host city and why?
Monte-Carlo. It is a special tournament with so much history there. The club is amazing.
If you could win a second Masters 1000, which would it be?
I would say Monte-Carlo. I am living there now so it would be nice to win at home there.
Do you remember your Masters 1000 debut?
I think it was Indian Wells. I qualified here in 2018 and I lost to Taro Daniel I believe. Coming here with the locker room and the history of the tournament and seeing that. If I won I would have played Djokovic but I lost to Taro in a battle and then he went and beat Djokovic in the next match. I was a bit jealous of that. It was good to qualify here for the first time and play here with the facilities.
What would your dream match be at a Masters 1000?
I would like to play Alcaraz in the final of Monte-Carlo, that would be an amazing experience.
What would be your best Masters 1000 match win?
I would say probably the semi-finals in Indian Wells against Dimitrov. I played a flawless match in 2021.
What is your favourite activity you have done at one of the events?
I went to the final of the Rugby World Cup in Paris two years ago.
What is your favourite court at any of the Masters 1000 events?
Indian Wells, Court 2 I like.
What is the toughest aspect of playing and being successful at a Masters 1000 tournament?
You know it is one of the biggest tournaments in the world, all the top players are playing and everyone wants to play well at these tournaments. All the big points are on offer if you do very well.
